Food Drive - Peanut Butter and Jelly

"A Food Drive” to collect peanut butter and jelly or jam for Betty Chinn’s outreach to the homeless will be featured at this year’s Northcoast Youth Summit. This service event will connect the delegates to the importance of learning about the needs of the homeless in our community and giving to help meet a need.  Attendees are being asked to bring jars of peanut butter and jelly or jam for making sandwiches that are distributed daily.  Betty Chinn will be one of the feature keynote speakers at this year’s Northcoast Youth Summit where she will share her personal story of how outreach to the homeless has become her passion.  Youth will learn the impact realized by the dedication of one person and the catalyst that provides for the community.  Several of the 40 workshops being offered during the summit will connect directly to issues of homelessness and skills for making a positive difference in the community.

Help Clean the Homeless

My name is Shelby Beck.  I am 14 years old and a member of Freshwater 4-H.  I am doing a year long, county wide community service project for 4-H called Emerald Star.  For my emerald star project, I am helping Betty with her shower project.  Her project is the St. Vincent De Paul Shower Project that is building showers so people in need can get clean.  I read Betty’s story in the paper and asked if I could help.  I learned from Betty that she serves people of all ages, even kids my age need to use the showers.  We want them to be clean so they can stay healthy and go to school and work.  I am collecting hotel size bar soap, shampoo, and conditioner for the shower project for individuals to shower.  I am very excited about this project.  In my first two weeks, I have already collected enough to shower 43 persons.  I am looking for people that would like to help with my project.  Anyone that stays in hotels can help.  All you have to do is collect the items that you don’t use and take them periodically to the County 4-H Office at 5630 Broadway Eureka.  If you would like more information or have questions please contact me at 442-8015 or helphomeless22@yahoo.com.
